Mesh-back also resists clogging on softwood, painted, and finish-loaded surfaces, extending sheet life over standard hole-punched paper.

Application: 120 grit is the workhorse middle step on bare wood: smooths out the scratch pattern from 80 grit and prepares the surface for finer grits. It's also the right grit for scuffing primer between coats, prepping for stain on hardwood, and cleaning up table-saw or jig-saw edges.

Tip: Step the grits 80 -> 120 -> 180 -> 220 for a paint- or stain-ready finish; don't skip more than one grit at a time or scratches from the coarser grit will show through. For hardwoods that will be stained, stop at 180 - 220 closes the grain too tight on species like oak and ash.
