Sinker vs common: A sinker is both shorter and thinner than a common nail of the same penny size. In Grip-Rite's own catalog the 16d sinker is 9 gauge x 3-1/4", while the 16d common is 8 gauge x 3-1/2". The sinker head is countersunk rather than flat, so it sets flush with the surface instead of sitting proud.
