Sinker vs common: A sinker is both shorter and thinner than a common nail of the same penny size. In Grip-Rite's own catalog the 8d sinker is 11-1/2 gauge x 2-3/8", while the 8d common is 10-1/4 gauge x 2-1/2". The sinker head is countersunk rather than flat, so it sets flush with the surface instead of sitting proud.
