Tip: Press the compound in with the first pass and scrape it off flush with the second. Spackling shrinks slightly as it dries, so on anything deeper than a nail hole expect to come back for a second thin coat rather than trying to fill it in one heavy pass.

Care: Wipe the blade clean and dry it before you set the tool down. Joint compound and spackling are easy to wipe off wet and stubborn once they cure, and a cured ridge on the edge will drag lines through your next coat.
