Tip: Keep the blade at a shallow angle. Driving a stiff blade in at a steep angle gouges the drywall paper, and torn paper has to be sealed before it will take compound or paint. On wallpaper, score and soak the paper first and let the scraper lift it rather than forcing it.

Care: Wipe the blade clean and dry it before you set the tool down. Joint compound and spackling are easy to wipe off wet and stubborn once they cure, and a cured ridge on the edge will drag lines through your next coat.
