Tip: Medium notch profile is the common pick for 4x4 to 6x6 ceramic wall tile set with Type 1 mastic. Provides enough adhesive ridge to back-buttering is not required on a flat, sealed wall substrate.
Technique: Hold the trowel at roughly a 45-degree angle to the substrate and pull in straight, parallel passes to leave clean V-ridges. Inconsistent angle or curved sweeps produce uneven adhesive depth and lippage between tiles. Work in small sections so the adhesive does not skin over before tiles are set.
Plastic-vs-Steel: Plastic blades are lighter, cheaper, and easier on glass and decorative tile backs, but they wear faster and flex more than steel under heavy thinset. For full-coverage floor mortar or large-format tile, use a steel-blade square-notch trowel rated for the adhesive being applied.
