A ship auger bores deep, clean holes through wood where an ordinary bit would wander or clog. The single spur, single cutter and solid center twist reduce vibration, and the open flute carries chips up out of the hole instead of packing them in. Century lists these for treated wood and poles, wherever deep, clean holes are required.

Tip: The lead screw self-feeds once it bites, so hold the drill with both hands and let the screw set the pace rather than leaning on it. On deep holes, back the bit partway out every few inches to clear the flute. Check the 0.6250" decimal equivalent against whatever you are running through the hole before you drill, and remember the chuck takes up part of the 7-1/2" overall length, so usable depth is less than that.
