Branch a 4" horizontal sewer or drain line off a 6" main at a 45-degree angle. The reducing wye lets you tap a house-sized 4" lateral into a municipal-sized 6" main sewer -- exactly the fitting you need at the property line or where a smaller building drain enters a larger collector.
