This GearWrench 7/16" deep socket has a 6-point opening for secure, round-fastener engagement and reduced rounding on worn or rusted bolts. The deep-well length reaches recessed and protruding fasteners that standard-depth sockets cannot - alternator bolts, spark plugs, valve cover studs, and threaded posts that stick up past the surrounding hardware.

Tip: Use 7/16" for small engine accessory bolts, valve cover bolts on some 4-cyl engines, smaller intake manifold bolts, accessory bracket fasteners. Deep sockets give you reach but trade torque control - on stuck or rusted fasteners use a 6-point (not 12-point) and add penetrating oil before applying force. For lug nuts or anything over 80 ft-lb, step up to a 1/2" drive socket - the 3/8" drive square is rated for general-purpose automotive work, not heavy torque.
