Choosing the width: The 1-1/2" blade is the general-purpose width - wide enough to cover ground on trim, sills, and furniture, narrow enough to stay controllable on contoured work.

Keeping an edge: Red Devil's instruction for these blades is to resharpen the edges with a file. Reverse the blade when the first edge dulls, and fit a fresh blade once both edges are past filing.

Before you scrape: Paint applied in homes built before 1978 may contain lead. Scraping it releases dust and chips. If you are working on a pre-1978 surface, test the paint first and follow lead-safe work practices rather than dry-scraping it into the open air.
