SPIRAL FLUTE SCREW EXTRACTOR - NO. 4Spiral flute screw extractor for backing out a screw, bolt or stud that has broken off while still in the fastening hole. The spiral flutes grip the broken fastener more deeply as torque is applied, so the bite increases the harder the extractor is turned.
- No. 4 size - removes broken bolts and screws 9/32" to 3/8"
- Also removes broken 1/8" pipe
- Pilot hole: drill 1/4" (a left-hand drill is preferred - Century packs left-hand quick-cut drills alongside these extractors in its combination sets, and a left-hand bit will sometimes back the fastener out before the extractor is needed)
- Extractor overall length 3"
- Spiral design grips material for superior extractions
- Heat treated tempered body
- Held in a tap wrench - Century rates its T-handle tap wrench (1/4" to 1/2" tap capacity) and its 1/4" to 1/2" adjustable tap wrench to fit the No. 4 spiral extractor
- Manufacturer part number: 73404
Extraction Tip: Center-punch the broken fastener so the pilot drill cannot wander, then drill the pilot hole straight and centered, using cutting oil to keep the heat down. Tap the extractor into the hole with a hammer to seat the flutes, then turn it slowly counter-clockwise with a tap wrench. A snapped extractor is far harder to remove than the fastener it was sent after, so do not use an impact driver and do not apply more torque than the wrench tolerates - if it will not move, soak it with penetrating oil and come back to it.
